Protein powders are the most popular dietary supplements for athletes and physically active people. Protein is a very universal macronutrient that performs many functions in the body - from the fact that it builds most of the structures in the human body, and ending with the fact that proteins regulate almost all physiological processes in the body. Depending on the workload, the demand for this important component increases. The main sources of protein in the diet should be lean meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, as well as plants such as soybeans, peas and high-protein species of mushrooms.

The need for protein is a very individual factor, depending on gender, age, physical activity and health. WHO (World Health Organization) recommends eating at least 0.8 g of protein for every kilogram of body weight. Physically active people usually need to provide 1.5 - 2.5 g of protein per kilogram of weight from the diet, and professional athletes and athletes consume them even 2-3 times more. Protein is a safe macroelement and for a healthy person consuming larger amounts of protein will not be associated with health problems. In contrast, people struggling with kidney disease should avoid excess protein in the diet.

As protein demand increases, the difficulty in providing protein increases. For example, a person who needs to provide 200 g of protein per day on their menu should include in their menu: 5 large eggs, 400 g chicken breast, 200 g lean beef, 200 g lean fish, e.g. cod fillet. For people who do not want to spend half a day in the kitchen and supermarkets or browse dozens of culinary websites in search of interesting recipes, protein supplements will be helpful.

What are protein supplements? It's easiest to compare them to eating powder. The highly concentrated nutrient contains 70-90% protein in dry matter, thanks to which one portion provides as much protein as 100 g of chicken breast. Preparation of a sheikh is very easy. Just pour one tablespoon of the powder into water or milk, mix and drink with taste. It is also worth mentioning another benefit of using protein supplements: taste. Manufacturers of supplements offer extremely tempting flavours, such as cream cake, white chocolate, toffee, salted caramel, and even the taste of a birthday cake. However, the most popular nutritional flavours are still chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and banana. By adding unique flavours, you can also prepare delicious high-protein desserts - pancakes, muffins, tarts, fruit porridge and pudding with protein supplements. A good protein supplement is also the basis for making homemade protein bars. The protein supplement can be taken anywhere - to work, to school or on a trip and consumed in a discreet way. Protein shakes are also part of the lifestyle of people who take care of themselves and pay attention to what they consume.

Protein supplements are usually animal products. Cow's milk is the most common raw material used for its production. Sometimes other types of milk from goats and sheep are used. Whey is made from milk, which after drying and filtering significantly increases the protein content. Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is the most common product made from whey. It has a high biological value (BV = 104), and therefore is well absorbed, digests quickly and provides valuable amino acids. WPC is used as an accompaniment to meals. A slightly more advanced product is whey protein isolate (WPI), which has an even higher biological value (BV = 159), which results from a more concentrated protein content and exogenous amino acids (e.g. BCAA). Due to the trace amount of milk sugars and fat, WPI quickly digests and replenishes the pool of amino acids in the blood. It is an ideal protein to be consumed immediately after training. Whey protein hydrolyzate (WPH) is the third type of whey protein supplements. This, in turn, is the fastest digestible protein supplement because it is partially digested due to enzymatic treatment.

In the case of milk protein, it is worth mentioning casein. It is difficult to digest protein fraction, and the nutrients obtained from it are valued for their delicate, milky taste, pudding consistency and long absorption time. Thanks to this, amino acids are present in the bloodstream for practically several hours, which undoubtedly promotes regeneration and maintains a feeling of satiety.

Other types of animal proteins that can be found on the dietary supplements market are supplements based on hydrolyzed collagen. Collagen is a very simple protein that most body tissues are made of. It gives them the right structure and strength. Collagen proteins are often recommended to supplement the diet with protein in people on a ketogenic diet.

Currently, egg white nutrients are rarely used. Despite their high biological value, they are not very popular due to the content of sulfur amino acids, which can cause stomach problems in larger quantities.

Recently, plant-based proteins - protein supplements based on peas, soy, hemp or rice - are coming back to the favor of the sports community and more. The amino acid composition of these proteins does not always suit the needs of the body, and the right composition and combination can give the effect of full-value protein. While in the case of whey or casein proteins, allergic reactions can occur in people who cannot tolerate dairy products, nutritious vegetable protein compositions are a good alternative and will help you successfully supplement your diet with valuable proteins.
